## Discord ANSI color codes

Each code goes between the escape character and m, like ␛[31m. Combine codes with a semicolon: ␛[1;4;32m is bold, underlined green.

## How colored text works in Discord

Discord colors text inside code blocks tagged ansi. Each color starts with an invisible escape character followed by a code such as [31m for red, and stays on until a reset code [0m. You can't type the escape character on a normal keyboard, which is why colored text needs a generator: you pick colors visually, and the copied block already contains the invisible characters.

## Eight text colors and eight backgrounds

Codes 30 to 37 set the text color — gray, red, green, yellow, blue, pink, cyan, and white. Codes 40 to 47 set a background, 1 makes text bold, and 4 underlines it. Discord renders these with its own palette, so the preview here uses the exact colors Discord shows instead of terminal colors.

## Colored text on Discord mobile

The Discord mobile apps show ANSI code blocks as plain monospace text without colors. Desktop and the web app show them in full color. Write messages that still read well without color — use words like OK or ERROR next to the color — so phone readers don't miss the meaning.

## Older tricks: diff, fix, and css code blocks

Before ANSI support, people colored text by abusing syntax highlighting: lines starting with + in a diff block turn green, - turns red, and a fix block shows yellow. Those tricks only give a few colors per line and depend on the highlighter. ANSI gives you any color on any word, and backgrounds too.

## Color-coded logs, posted for you

Colored text shines in logs: green for joins, red for bans, yellow for warnings. A [Discord logging bot](https://fromflow.dev/discord-logging-bot/) posts every moderation action and member event to a channel automatically — no code, hosted 24/7.

FAQ

## Discord colored text FAQ

### How do you type in color on Discord?

Wrap your text in a code block tagged ansi and put an ANSI color code before the words you want colored. This generator builds the block for you — select a word, pick a color, and copy.

### What colors can you use in Discord text?

Eight text colors (gray, red, green, yellow, blue, pink, cyan, white) and eight background colors, plus bold and underline. Discord doesn't support custom hex colors in messages.

### Does Discord colored text work on mobile?

Not yet. The mobile apps show ANSI blocks as plain text. Colors appear on Discord desktop and in the browser.

### Why is my Discord colored text not showing colors?

Usually the code block is missing the ansi tag right after the three backticks, the invisible escape character got lost when copying, or you're viewing it on mobile. Copy the block again from this page and paste it as is.

### Can Discord bots send colored text?

Yes. A bot can send the same ansi code block in a message or an embed description. Use Copy for bot code to get the text with escape sequences written out for your code.

### Can I color text without a code block?

No. Normal Discord messages can't be colored; only role colors and code blocks show color. Colored text always appears in a monospace code block.
