Sign Up ## How to set up a rules channel on Discord Create a text channel called #rules at the top of your channel list and make it read-only: in its permissions, deny Send Messages for @everyone. If your server has Community enabled, pick it as the Rules or Guidelines channel in Server Settings, then turn on Onboarding or Membership Screening so new members accept the rules before they can talk. Paste the generated rules, and pin nothing else in that channel. ## Short, numbered rules get followed Ten to fifteen one-line rules is plenty โ€” the generator starts you there and keeps the rest as optional extras. Members actually read a short list, and numbering lets moderators point to a rule โ€” โ€œthat's rule 4โ€ โ€” instead of arguing about wording. Specific beats generic: a gaming server needs a line about cheats and account trading, a support server needs one about never sharing tokens. That is why the generator changes the list with the server type instead of serving one boilerplate. ## Voice chat rules and moderator rules Voice channels have problems text rules never mention: mic spam, soundboards, people recording without asking, and channel hopping. Add the Voice chat section if your server talks a lot. Switch to Moderators to get a separate rule set for your staff team โ€” fairness, a punishment ladder, logging every action, and keeping staff matters private. Post that one in a private moderator channel, not in #rules. ## Rules only work when they are enforced A rules channel nobody enforces turns into decoration within a week. Pick one punishment ladder โ€” warning, timeout, kick, ban โ€” apply it to everyone the same way, and write down every action. A bot can carry most of that load: it can ask new members to click โ€œI agreeโ€ before unlocking the server, delete scam links and spam on its own, and log every moderation action for the team. ## Post and enforce the rules automatically Want new members to accept the rules before they can talk? Create a text channel named #rules, deny Send Messages for @everyone so it stays read-only, and paste your rules. On Community servers, set it as the Rules or Guidelines channel in Server Settings and enable Onboarding or Membership Screening. ### What are good rules for a Discord server? Every server needs five basics: be respectful, no hate speech, keep it safe for work, no spam or unapproved self-promotion, and follow Discord's Terms of Service. Add one to three rules specific to your server's purpose on top. ### How many rules should a Discord server have? Ten to fifteen is enough for most servers, and a small server can start with the eight simple rules above. Long rule lists don't get read, so keep each rule to one sentence and number them so moderators can reference them. ### Can I post my Discord rules as an embed? Regular accounts can't send embeds โ€” only bots and webhooks can. Choose the Embed format, copy the JSON, and send it through your bot or a webhook. To paste the rules yourself, use the Numbered, Emoji, or Simple format. ### What are good voice chat rules for Discord? Cover mic spam and loud noises, push-to-talk in noisy rooms, no recording without consent, letting others speak, music bots only in music channels, and keeping screen shares safe for work. ### What should Discord moderator rules include? Treat every member the same, follow a punishment ladder, log every action with a reason, never use permissions for personal reasons, step back when you're involved, and keep staff discussions private.
